Role Comparison
FDE vs Sales Engineer
A sales engineer wins the technical evaluation before the contract. A forward deployed engineer ships the product into production after it, on the customer's real data and systems. Median pay sits close on Levels.fyi: $205,000 for SEs and $216,250 for FDEs (U.S., self-reported, Oct 12, 2026). The split is typically in structure: base plus commission, often with equity, for the SE; base plus equity, occasionally OTE, for the FDE. One question sorts them: does the job end at signature, or continue through production?

Quick Quiz
Which role does your situation need?
Five questions for buyers, hiring managers, and engineers weighing a move. We point you to an FDE, an SE, or both.
// Your situation
An SE fits
Your answers point at the evaluation: discovery, demos, a proof of concept, and security review, with pay tied to closed deals. That is the SE job. Plan the hand-off to whoever owns production after signature.
The TL;DR
Two roles. Two stages of the deal.
Neither role replaces the other. Pick by where your deals get stuck.
Pick an FDE if...
- Signed contracts stall before production
- The product needs customer data, tools, and permissions to work
- You want a business metric owned after signature
- Field findings should change the product roadmap
- You can pay mid-level engineering rates and fund travel
Pick an SE if...
- The product is clear and deals stall in technical evaluation
- Prospects need demos, a POC, and security review answers
- You want technical expertise tied to the sales cycle
- Account executives need a technical partner on every deal
- You need to hire from a wider pool and ramp faster

The 6 Dimensions of the Job
Six dimensions, scored 1 to 10 by our editors from the sources cited on this page. A higher score means the role carries more of that dimension, not that it is the better hire.
Production Code Ownership
Both roles write code. The difference is where it runs. An SE builds demos, proofs of concept, and scripts for the evaluation. An FDE ships software that runs on the customer's live systems and stays there after the engagement.
- Code serves the sale: demos, proofs of concept, scripts, and API calls
- Snowflake's Associate Solution Engineer posting: "from tailored demos and proofs of concept to solution design and implementation" (posted late Sept 2026)
- POCs often run on sample or anonymized data
- Production systems pass to delivery after signature

Final Tally
Different jobs. The stage of the deal decides.
No overall winner. Each role carries more of some dimensions; the Webfuse editorial scores below show which, with the evidence on this page. A team that needs pre-sale help gets little from FDE strengths.

Method: dimension scores are Webfuse editorial scores based on the evidence on this page, not measured data. FDE shares cited to Bloomberry come from its analysis of 1,000 FDE postings (Nov 2025, updated Jan 2026, no stated geography). Counts labelled "Webfuse sample" come from our own postings sample: 93 FDE and 74 SE postings (Sales Engineer and Solutions Engineer titles, support roles excluded) from 27 public company job boards, collected Oct 13, 2026, deduplicated, at most 13 per company, keyword match. The same rules produce the FDE vs Solutions Architect page's counts. Travel and posted-pay detail for FDEs: see our analysis of 102 FDE postings from Oct 7, 2026.
SEs demo the product. FDEs wire it into systems the customer owns.

Pay and hiring
Similar medians. Different pay structure.
Median total pay for the two titles sits close, about $205,000 to $216,000 on Levels.fyi (SE $205,000, FDE $216,250, U.S., self-reported, Oct 12, 2026). The structure differs typically: SE pay more often carries commission, FDE pay leans on base and equity, and both often include equity. Every figure below names its source, date, and type. The sources cover different populations, so read them side by side and do not average them.
- Median posted salary $173,816 across 1,000 postings, geography not stated (Bloomberry, updated Jan 25, 2026)

Where each one breaks
What goes wrong, and what goes wrong at the seam.
Both roles fail in known ways, and the worst failures happen at the seam between them. The items below come from practitioner reporting, job postings, and the sources cited on this page.
Free implementation labor
With no outcome metric and no product feedback, the FDE does custom work the vendor never generalizes. That is consulting with a new title.
Webfuse analysis
Lock-in by accident
An FDE who ships fast without infrastructure as code, evals, or a named owner leaves a system only the vendor can operate. Contracts should list the hand-off artifacts as deliverables.
Webfuse analysis
Talent is scarce and brittle
Travel, ambiguity, short deadlines, and customer politics narrow the pool. 68% of FDE postings require travel, and 60% target mid-level engineers (Bloomberry).
Bloomberry, Jan 2026
A relabeled SE
A posting with quota or commission and no production code describes an SE. a16z (Jan 27, 2026) notes Palantir relabeled solutions and integration engineers as FDEs in 2011. Tailscale shows hybrids exist, so read the posting, not the title.
a16z, Jan 2026
POC on clean data, production on messy data
The proof of concept often runs on sample or anonymized data. The Pragmatic Engineer reports that OpenAI's solutions architects build proofs of concept "with anonymized or offline cuts of data." Production runs on the real thing, and the gaps land on whoever deploys.
The Pragmatic Engineer, Aug 2025
Accountability ends at signature
The SE is measured on the technical win. Promises made in the evaluation have no owner after the contract if the hand-off does not write them down.
Christian & Timbers, Aug 2026
One role for both phases
Phos AI Labs: "Expecting SE code to hold up in production is one of the most consistent sources of post-sale implementation failure." This is opinion, with no data attached.
Phos AI Labs, Aug 7, 2026
The SE-to-FDE gap
Moving an SE into deployment needs production code depth and a shift "from supporting a buying decision to owning a system through production."
Christian & Timbers, Aug 2026
Both lists draw on job postings, practitioner reporting, and executive-search analysis published between Aug 2025 and Oct 2026. Titles move fast: read what a posting asks for, not what it calls the role.
Use Case Picks
Which role fits the situation?
Six common situations with a defended pick, then the hand-off that connects the two roles on one deal.
Deals stall in technical evaluation
The product is clear and the buyer needs proof. Discovery, demos, and a scoped POC move the deal.
Signed deals stall before production
The bottleneck is deployment. Someone has to write production code on the customer's systems and own the result.
Security questionnaires and RFPs
RFP response time and evaluation time are common SE KPIs in industry guides. This is pre-sale work.
An AI agent that acts inside customer systems
Agents need tools, scoped permissions, an identity, and an eval set built on real cases. FDE postings name MCP servers and sub-agents as deliverables.
Demo and POC on sample data
Snowflake's SE posting runs "from tailored demos and proofs of concept to solution design and implementation."
Large enterprise AI deal, end to end
The SE wins the evaluation, the FDE takes it to production. The hand-off at signature decides how much is lost between them.
// One deal, both roles
How the two roles work one deal
- 1AE
Qualify
An account executive qualifies an insurer that wants an AI claims-intake agent.
- 2SE
Win the evaluation
The SE runs discovery, demos on sample data, runs a POC of a few weeks on anonymized claims (illustrative), and answers the security questionnaire. Output: a technical win and written success criteria.
- 3SE + FDE
Hand off at signature
Contract signed. In the hand-off meeting the SE passes on the POC scope, known gaps, promised integrations, and the stakeholder map.
- 4FDE
Build for production
The FDE maps the real workflow, builds an eval set from historical claims, builds MCP tools against the claims system, sets agent identity and permissions, and ships.
- 5FDE
Hand over and feed back
The FDE hands runbooks to a named customer owner and files product gaps. The SE reuses the reference in the next deal.

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Short answers, each with its source and date.
Is a forward deployed engineer a sales role?
Mostly no. It is typically an engineering role. Bloomberry's analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings (Nov 2025, updated Jan 2026) reports 0% quota-carrying postings, though it classes 30% of FDE jobs as rebranded sales-engineer roles paid "$120-200K + commission, quota-carrying." 45% of postings mention a dedicated FDE team and 38% an engineering org; 14% mention go-to-market or sales (mentions overlap).
Do forward deployed engineers get commission?
Occasionally. 8% of the 1,000 postings Bloomberry reviewed mention on-target earnings, and 70% include equity. Exceptions exist: Tailscale (variable pay tied to quarterly sales targets), Harvey (FDE OTE $254,600 to $350,000, 75/25 split), and Together AI (OTE $270,000 to $300,000).
Do sales engineers write code?
Yes, but the code serves the sale: demos, proofs of concept, scripts, and API calls. Snowflake's Associate Solution Engineer posting (posted late Sept 2026) covers the cycle "from tailored demos and proofs of concept to solution design and implementation." Production systems on customer infrastructure are typically FDE work.
Who earns more, an FDE or a sales engineer?
The medians sit close. Levels.fyi lists $205,000 median total pay for sales engineers and $216,250 for FDEs (U.S., self-reported, updated Oct 12, 2026). AI-lab FDE pay runs higher: Anthropic posted a base of $200,000 to $300,000 plus equity (posting seen in 2026; may since have closed). By a different method, the BLS median wage for all sales engineers was $124,900 (May 2025 data), and $153,410 in software publishing.
Can a sales engineer become an FDE?
Yes. The move needs production code depth and a willingness to own a system after signature. Christian & Timbers (Aug 17, 2026) describes the shift as going "from supporting a buying decision to owning a system through production."
When should a company hire an SE vs an FDE?
Hire an SE when the product is clear and deals stall in technical evaluation. Hire an FDE when signed deals stall before production. Christian & Timbers puts it as one question: "does the person's accountability largely end at signature, or continue through production?"
What did Palantir mean by "sparkling sales engineers"?
On Palantir's Q2 2026 earnings call (Aug 3, 2026), CTO Shyam Sankar said: "Remember, only Palantir has FDEs. Everyone else has sparkling sales engineers." The claim is that rival FDE teams are sales engineers with a new title. a16z (Jan 27, 2026) notes Palantir itself relabeled solutions and integration engineers as FDEs in 2011. The practical test is production code and outcome ownership, not the title.
What can an FDE do when the customer's workflow runs in a web app with no API?
Some workflows live in web apps the customer uses but does not own, such as a supplier portal or a legacy SaaS tool. The FDE can wait for an integration or have the agent operate the web interface. Webfuse is browser infrastructure for AI agents: it lets an agent work inside a live web session of a site the customer does not own, with no change to that site's code. Browser-automation frameworks and cloud browsers are the other common options.
